The Hilda L. Solis Care First Village provides a home for unsheltered residents of Los Angeles and serves as a stepping stone through housing, wellness, employment. This 60,500 square-foot interim housing is one of Weingart Center’s solutions to proactively end homelessness. Built using prefabricated modular units, this project was designed, built, and received final approvals in just four months. Using 60 locally repurposed shipping containers and 20 custom-manufactured mobile trailers from Idaho allowed the key players involved in this project to quickly deliver results.

The housing unit features 232 units with:

  • kitchen space

  • dining area

  • laundry facilities

  • dog park

  • administrative spaces which include parking spaces for both staff and residents

  • landscaped courtyards for outdoor activities

The Hilda L. Solis Care First Village officially opened in May 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many residents in Los Angeles were at risk of homelessness and those already unsheltered were at risk for infection. A project of this caliber typically takes two to three years to reach completion, but because of the urgency for an interim housing solution to our vulnerable LA residents, the project was completed in five months. Initially the land was acquired for a new Men’s Central Jail, but Chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Hilda L. Solis led the effort to cancel that contract.

“What once was supposed to be a staging area to build a new Men’s Central Jail will now serve as a safe space to address the housing, mental and behavioral health needs of our residents experiencing homelessness,” said Chair Solis. read more
