What a Difference A Job Makes

What a Difference A Job Makes

DONATE NOW TO THE WEINGART CENTER “SOCIAL ENTERPRISE MATCHING GIFT CHALLENGE” AND HELP HOMELESS MEN AND WOMEN FIND JOBS

Sometimes, when people pass a person on the street that is down and out, they think, “that person should get a job.” But how many of us would offer them a job? The nonprofit-run businesses called “social enterprises” actually do.
The Weingart Center, located in the heart of Los Angeles’ Skid Row, is in the early stages of starting businesses to employ those homeless individuals now re-entering the workforce. But the Weingart Center needs your financial help.
REDF, a California-based philanthropy organization that invests in nonprofit-run businesses already has made a major financial commitment to the program. The Weingart Center must raise another $500,000 to match the
investment by REDF. REDF also will provide hands-on business and technical assistance to the Weingart Center to help start our social
enterprises.

“Given the continued sky-high national unemployment figures, REDF’s effort to expand businesses and create jobs is clearly more urgent than ever,” said Carla Javits, REDF President.
Even though they are eager to work, many people find entering and staying in the work force can be extremely difficult because of major challenges such as homelessness, limited education, drug or alcohol dependency, criminal record, and physical and/or mental health issues.

The Weingart Center helps break the cycle of homelessness so individuals can lead self-sufficient lives by providing on-site transitional housing; case management; substance abuse recovery; mental health treatment; education; workforce development, and other services.

We all agree that employment can be the best remedy for poverty and homelessness—please donate today.
