GROW
The GROW program provides employment and training services to people receiving General Relief (GR) to help them obtain a permanent job and become self-sufficient. GROW features a short-term, intensive job preparedness and employment search curriculum that includes:
- Orientation and Job Skills Assessment - This half-day motivational orientation provides participants with an overview of the program and its services. Participants take a literacy test, and are assigned a case manager who evaluates individual needs.
- Job Club - This three-week activity consists of a one-week job skills workshop plus two weeks of directed, intense job search activities.
- Vocational Assessment – For participants who do not find work during Job Club, we will provide one-on-one job counseling, and if needed, referrals for training or education that will help secure employment.
The GROW Employment Development Team
The GROW program consists of dedicated staff members who work together to determine the best way to assist the participants with their employment goals.
- Facilitators assist participants during their enrollment, and conduct Orientation and Job Skills Preparation classes.
- Case managers conduct an initial assessment of each participant then plan the necessary program activities, monitor progress, and provide on-going support and motivation.
- Job Developers work with employers in the local community to identify employment opportunities and match participants with the labor force need. Job Developers also assist participants in directed job search efforts and reviews their progress.
Work-Related Expenses
GROW pays for work-related expenses incurred by its program participants, including: books, tools and fees, plus transportation to/from the program, to look for work, to/from work pending receipt of first paycheck, and for appointments with the case manager.
Supportive and Post-Employment Services
GROW assists participants in overcoming barriers to employment by providing referrals for substance abuse recovery, mental health treatment and domestic violence counseling. In addition, GROW provides post-employment services and case management to employed participants to assist them with maintaining employment, obtaining additional education and advancing their careers.
Collaborative Partnership
GROW operates in a collaborative partnership with the Weingart Center Association, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services (DPSS), and the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE). Participation in GROW is mandatory for all employable GR recipients.
