The thomas and dorothy leavey learning center
"Education is Key to Success"
In operation since November 27, 2000, the Weingart Center's Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Learning Center is the result of a collaborative community partnership with Los Angeles Unified School District's Belmont Community Adult School. Providing a much needed adult educational resource for the skid row community, the Leavey Learning Center provides information, education, and training to Weingart Center residential program participants, community residents, and employees of businesses in the downtown and surrounding area.
Operated solely under the auspices of LAUSD, the Leavey Learning Center has a staff of instructors who believe in student based educational services and who are sensitive to the needs of residents and workers in the community.
The Learning Center operates on a trimester calendar and offers classes on an open enrollment, tuition free basis.
The current roster of services include:
- Literacy and Skills Assessment Testing
- Individualized Educational Counseling
- Referrals for GED Testing and Vocational Training
The current curriculum includes:
- Basic Reading and Math Classes
- English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes
