From the Office of the President
Dear Friends,
Since 1983 the Weingart Center Association
has been providing innovative programs and
services to thousands of men and women who
find themselves without hope and in despair on the streets of Skid Row. For 25
years, many people have graduated from one of our programs, obtained viable
employment, recovered from drug and alcohol dependence, and moved into
permanent housing. The comprehensive approach we take in our programs truly
impacts and transforms the lives of the people we serve. A good example of how
we make a difference is in the Transformational Story of Nadine; she is highlighted
in this newsletter. Her story is life-changing, and she is living her success after
overcoming so many challenges and obstacles in her life.
There continues to be 73,000 men, women and children in Los Angeles County
every year that are homeless, and 5,000 of them are right here in the Central City
East (Skid Row) section of Los Angeles. Sadly, the need for our services continues
to increase in 2008. We are meeting this challenge by building on our past, and
making new linkages to the public and private sector to refine our services in
the areas of workforce development, affordable permanent supportive housing,
integrated medical and mental health services, and services for families.
