CityLive 2000
On October 17, 2000 the Weingart Center met the Wild West as CityLive 2000 rolled down the Laramie Street set at Warner Bros. Once home to classic western television shows such as Bonanza and Little House on the Prairie, Laramie Street welcomed over 700 guests there to raise money and awareness towards the plight of the homeless.
Honored that evening were Aaron Sorkin, creator and writer of the Emmy-winning series The West Wing, and Richard Hartnack, Vice Chairman of Union Bank of California.
Aaron Sorkin was honored for an episode of The West Wing named “In Excelsis Deo”. The episode dealt with the plight of a homeless veteran and was recently awarded the Humanitas Prize. He was introduced by Peter Roth, President of Warner Bros. Television, and joined on stage by many of the show’s cast members, including Martin Sheen, Richard Schiff, John Spencer, Timothy Busfield and Dule Hill.
The Weingart Center honored Richard Hartnack for his long-time advocacy on behalf of the homeless and continued service on the WCA Board of Directors. “As someone who has worked for many years in the Downtown Los Angeles community, I have been extremely moved by the difficulty that homeless men and women face in obtaining even the most basic of human necessities.” Mr. Hartnack was introduced by Paul Watson, Vice Chairman of Wells Fargo Bank.
Throughout the evening, people wandered down the set’s streets taking bites out of the large BBQ buffet or bidding on one of the items at the many silent auction tables. Mistress of Ceremonies Suanne Braun kept the evening moving, while country crooned Lila McCann many of her popular tunes.
The event raised a record $321,000 to support Weingart Center programs.
